BALTIMORE, MD – The Independent Investigations Division (IID) of the Maryland Office of the Attorney General is investigating a shooting that occurred on the morning of Friday, January 31, in Baltimore City, Maryland.
Preliminary investigation revealed that on January 31, 2025, at approximately 8:40 a.m., a District Court of Maryland bailiff assigned to the Baltimore City Eastside District Court was working security at the public entrance of the courthouse. A man then entered the courthouse. While standing near the door, the man pulled a handgun from his pocket and pointed it at his own head. The bailiff then drew his handgun and pointed it at the man. During the interaction, the bailiff and the man discharged their handguns. The man was wounded during the encounter. The man was later transported to a local hospital where he remains in critical condition. Under Maryland law, bailiffs are special police officers that are employed by the State of Maryland.
The IID will generally release the name of the involved party and discharging officer within two business days of the incident, although that period may be extended, if necessary, pursuant to IID protocol.
Government-owned surveillance video captured the incident. The IID will generally release government-owned surveillance footage within 20 business days of an incident. There may be situations where more than 20 days is necessary, including if investigators need more time to complete witness interviews, if there are technical delays caused by the need to shield the identities of civilian witnesses, or to allow family members to view the video before it is released to the public.
