Salary: This position offers a salary range of $104,519 - $147,451, with potential for advancement up to $162,800 based on qualifications, equity, and hiring guidelines. Initial salary offers are determined by qualifications, experience, and available budget, and typically do not exceed $147,451. ​

DESCRIPTION:  The Attorney General is the chief legal officer of the State of Maryland. The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) has the general charge, supervision, and direction of the State’s legal business, acting as legal advisors and representatives of the major agencies, various boards, commissions, officials, and institutions of State Government. The OAG also protects the public by civil enforcement of antitrust, civil rights, consumer protection, and securities laws and regulations and by the prosecution of organized crime, Medicaid fraud, environmental crimes, insurance fraud, state tax evasion, and other statutorily assigned matters. As Maryland’s 47th Attorney General, Anthony G. Brown leads the Office with a critical focus on equity, justice, and fairness. 

The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) is seeking a dedicated and experienced attorney to serve as an Assistant Attorney General on the real estate legal team within the Department of General Services (DGS). This is a unique opportunity to contribute to the responsible stewardship of Maryland’s public assets and infrastructure by providing legal counsel on complex real estate matters that impact communities across the state.

DGS is responsible for a wide range of critical functions, including the procurement of commodities and services, energy and facilities management, information technology, leasing of space, and the design, construction, acquisition, and disposition of real property for the State of Maryland. The legal team currently includes 11 attorneys, led by the Principal Counsel and Deputy Principal Counsel, and is supported by a Management Associate. 

The Assistant Attorney General will serve as a key legal advisor to the Office of Real Estate, offering comprehensive counsel on a broad range of matters. This includes guiding the State through the acquisition and disposition of real property, including complex processes such as eminent domain and condemnation. The attorney will be responsible for drafting and reviewing intricate real estate documents, including leases, contracts of sale, deeds, easements, and rights-of-way, ensuring that all transactions are legally sound and aligned with the State’s interests. 

In addition, the role involves overseeing the State’s leasing activities and ensuring full compliance with applicable procurement laws and regulations. The attorney will address title-related issues, such as verifying legal property descriptions and securing title insurance when necessary. They will also provide legal advice on environmental compliance, lease enforcement, and matters related to the Public Information Act (PIA). 

Beyond these core duties, the Assistant Attorney General will act as a statewide legal resource, offering support and guidance to other State agencies on real estate-related issues. This collaborative role helps promote consistency, legal compliance, and best practices across Maryland’s public sector real estate operations. 

EXPERIENCE: The ideal candidate for this role will have a minimum of five years of experience, excellent research and writing skills and a demonstrated ability to handle complex real estate transactions. The successful candidate will have a proven track record of effective client counsel, preferably in a real estate-focused legal environment. Strong interpersonal and organizational skills, along with the ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced legal environment, are essential. Experience with government contracting/procurement is highly desirable. Admission to the Maryland Bar, or ability to waive in, is required
