Volunteer and Internship Opportunities

Volunteer Opportunities

Do you like to help people? Are you interested in experiencing the workings of a law enforcement agency? Do you live in the Baltimore or Largo area? Come volunteer in the Attorney General's Consumer Protection Division!

Our volunteers provide an invaluable service to Maryland consumers. They respond to consumer inquiries on the telephone hotline, and mediate consumer complaints against businesses and health care providers. They settle disputes in sales, repairs, debt collection, defective products, false advertising, health spas, housing and medical bills. Volunteers receive training in mediation and learn valuable skills.

The Division's Mediation Unit is open weekdays between 8:00 and 5:00, and volunteers are asked to work 10 hours per week. They are reimbursed at the rate of $20 stipend per day. The Consumer Protection Division is located in a convenient downtown Baltimore location, near the Light Rail and Metro, museums, shops, restaurants and other attractions. We also have volunteers working in our Prince Georges County office in Largo. Free parking is offered to volunteers at both locations.

Internship Opportunities

We offer a range of internship opportunities for college and law school students. Interns receive training in local, state, and federal consumer protection laws, develop conflict resolution skills, and gain firsthand experience within a state law enforcement agency.

  • Mediation InternsAssist the mediation of complaints related to various goods and services, credit, and housing, and provide consumer tips and legal information.
  • Health Advocacy Interns: Address consumer complaints against healthcare providers and insurers, respond to inquiries via our hotline, and research current health policy and legislative issues.
Candidates should possess strong verbal and written communication skills and have an interest in dispute resolution, consumer advocacy, governmental affairs, or health policy. All academic majors are considered. A minimum commitment of 10 hours per week is required. Students seeking academic credit should consult their career center, internship coordinator, or sponsoring professor for approval.
