Medicaid Fraud & Vulnerable Victims

Who We Are
The Medicaid Fraud & Vulnerable Victims Unit (MFVVU) was created and federally certified in 1979 to combat fraud in Maryland’s health care system and protect vulnerable people. 75% of our funding comes from the Department of Health and Human Services.
We focus on three main areas:
-
Combating Medicaid Fraud: We investigate and take legal actions against health care providers who deceive the Medicaid program and misuse its funds.
-
Protecting Vulnerable Adults: We investigate cases of suspected vulnerable adult abuse, neglect, or exploitation. Often, these crimes happen in nursing homes, assisted living centers, and programs for people with disabilities.
-
Fighting Drug Diversion: We investigate improper drug usage of health care providers.
How We Work
Our team of lawyers, investigators and auditors work together to:
- Uncover hidden fraud schemes.
- Investigate and stop abuse or neglect in long-term care facilities.
- Pursue legal actions under the Maryland False Health Claims Act.
- Work with other states on fraud cases that cross state lines.
