Medicaid Fraud & Vulnerable Victims

Who We Are

The Medicaid Fraud & Vulnerable Victims Unit (MFVVU) was created and federally certified in 1979 to combat fraud in Maryland’s health care system and protect vulnerable people. 75% of our funding comes from the Department of Health and Human Services.

We focus on three main areas:

  1. Combating Medicaid Fraud: We investigate and take legal actions against health care providers who deceive the Medicaid program and misuse its funds.
  2. Protecting Vulnerable Adults: We investigate cases of suspected vulnerable adult abuse, neglect, or exploitation. Often, these crimes happen in nursing homes, assisted living centers, and programs for people with disabilities.
  3. Fighting Drug Diversion: We investigate improper drug usage of health care providers.

How We Work

Our team of lawyers, investigators and auditors work together to:

  • Uncover hidden fraud schemes.
  • Investigate and stop abuse or neglect in long-term care facilities.
  • Pursue legal actions under the Maryland False Health Claims Act.
  • Work with other states on fraud cases that cross state lines.
