Our Mission
The Independent Investigations Division (IID) investigates all police-involved incidents in Maryland that result in a person's death or injuries likely to lead to death. We provide thorough, impartial investigations to ensure accountability and transparency in law enforcement.
About Us
IID was established by the Maryland General Assembly in 2021 as part of comprehensive police accountability reforms
Our Authority
The IID's authority has changed since its creation:
-
2021–2023: For incidents before October 1, 2023, the IID conducted investigations and provided detailed reports to the local State's Attorney, who retained sole prosecutorial authority.
-
2023–Present: For incidents occurring on or after October 1, 2023, the IID has both investigative and prosecutorial authority following legislative expansion in 2023.
Investigations
Since October 1, 2021, the IID has conducted 70 investigations into police-involved fatal or near-fatal incidents throughout the State.
The map below shows where those incidents have occurred. Click the markers for more information on each incident.
An in-depth dashboard of all IID investigations and corresponding press release, organized by calendar year, can be found under “Investigations” on the left.
