BALTIMORE, MD – Today, Attorney General Anthony G. Brown announced his decision not to seek charges in the May 13, 2024, fatal vehicle collision in Harwood, Anne Arundel County, Maryland.

On Monday, May 13, 2024, at approximately 5:35 a.m., a Calvert County Sheriff's Office deputy attempted to initiate a traffic stop on a vehicle suspected to have been involved in vehicle break-ins in Huntingtown, Maryland. The vehicle's driver failed to stop after the deputy activated his emergency lights and sirens. Calvert County Sheriff's Office deputies pursued the vehicle from Calvert County into Anne Arundel County. Approximately twenty-five miles after the pursuit began, the vehicle collided with a pick-up truck at the intersection of Birdsville Road and Solomons Island Road in Harwood, Maryland. The vehicle was occupied by three people and the truck was occupied by a single driver. Deputies provided emergency medical aid until personnel from the Anne Arundel County Fire Department arrived on scene. The adult male driver and the rear seat passenger, inside the vehicle, were transported to an area hospital and released after treatment. The front seat passenger of the vehicle, a juvenile, was transported to a local hospital where the juvenile was later pronounced dead. The driver of the pick-up truck was transported to a local area hospital, treated, and released. Anne Arundel County police officers did not participate in the pursuit.

The Attorney General's Independent Investigations Division (IID) began investigating the fatal vehicle crash on Monday, May 13, 2024, and concluded its investigation on Thursday, February 6, 2025. After completing its investigation and evaluating all the available evidence, the Office of the Attorney General has determined that none of the officers involved in the fatal vehicle collision committed a crime under Maryland law. Accordingly, the Attorney General has declined to prosecute any of the officers in this case.

Although it is standard practice for the IID to disclose names of involved decedents, the name of the decedent in this case has been withheld due to juvenile privacy law which prohibits disclosure.

A copy of the IID’s detailed investigative findings and analysis of relevant legal issues can be found in its declination report.
