The Maryland Office of the Attorney General works to protect residents, ensure justice, and improve public safety through several key initiatives.

Maryland Equitable Justice Collaborative (MEJC)
MEJC is a team made of the Attorney General's Office, the Public Defender's Office, and university researchers. We’re working together to reduce racial unfairness in Maryland’s criminal justice system. We focus on:
- Finding the reasons behind high incarceration rates
- Studying ways to fix racial disparities
- Recommending policy changes for fairer outcomes
Hate Crime Response and Prevention
We work to protect Marylanders from hate crimes and discrimination by:
- Managing the Maryland Commission on Hate Crime Response and Prevention
- Running a portal where people can report hate crimes and bias incidents
- Partnering with community groups and law enforcement
Report hate crimes or learn more at our
Hate Crimes Response and Prevention Portal.
Key Bridge Collapse Recovery

- Improving testing, storage, and funding for sexual assault evidence kits
- Coordinating between different agencies and organizations
- Dealing with the shortage of forensic nurses
- Keeping survivors informed about their cases
SAEK also leads the Sexual Assault Kit Initiative (SAKI) to address the backlog of untested sexual assault evidence kits. This includes:
- Managing a $2.6 million federal grant
- Working with other state agencies
- Creating survivor-focused policies
- Using best practices to prevent future backlogs

Office of the Chief Medical Examiner Audit
In May 2021, we started a review of in-custody death rulings made while Dr. David Fowler was in charge. This ongoing audit helps make sure medical examiner findings are correct and trustworthy. The OCME Audit work culminated in May 2025 when the OAG released the report detailing the audit’s finding.
