BALTIMORE, MD – Today, Attorney General Anthony G. Brown announced
his decision not to seek charges in the Friday, May 24, 2024 fatal officer-involved shooting in
Baltimore, Maryland.
On Friday, May 24, 2024, at approximately 10:25 p.m., officers with the Baltimore Police
Department were searching the 3400 block of South Hanover Street for Anthony Ferguson, a
person of interest in a crime that occurred on May 20, 2024. The officers located Ferguson sitting
on a porch of a vacant commercial building in the area of South Hanover Street and Baltic
Avenue. Four officers approached Ferguson on the porch to question him about the earlier crime
and proceeded to search Ferguson’s backpack. After they searched the backpack, Ferguson stood
up and lifted his shirt, revealing a gun tucked in the waistband of his pants. A fifth officer was
running toward the scene as the other officers gave verbal commands for Ferguson to drop the
handgun. Ferguson did not comply. Instead, Ferguson reached for his gun and exchanged gunfire
with the officers. During the course of the gunfire, Ferguson was struck several times by the
officers. Ferguson struck one of the officers in the chest, hitting the officer’s bulletproof vest.
Ferguson was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. The injured officer
was also transported to a local hospital where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
The Attorney General’s Independent Investigations Division (IID) began investigating the fatal
officer-involved shooting on Friday, May 24, 2024, and concluded its investigation on April 7,
2025. After completing its investigation and evaluating all the available evidence, the Office of
the Attorney General has determined that none of the officers involved in the fatal shooting
committed a crime under Maryland law. Accordingly, the Attorney General has declined to
prosecute any of the officers in this case.
A copy of the IID’s detailed investigative findings and analysis of relevant legal issues can be
found in its declination report.
