BALTIMORE, MD– The Independent Investigations Division (IID) of the Maryland Office of the Attorney General (OAG) is investigating a fatal police-involved shooting that occurred on Friday, July 31, 2026, in Fort Washington, Prince George's County, Maryland.
The preliminary investigation revealed that on Friday, July 31, 2026, shortly after 6:00 p.m., officers with the Maryland-National Capital Park Police (MNCPP), Prince George's County Division, the Prince George's County Police Department (PGPD), and the U.S. Park Police (USPP) responded to a call for a shooting and a man walking near the river with a gun in Fort Washington Park. An officer with the MNCPP encountered a man by the river. During that encounter, the officer from the MNCPP discharged his service weapon, striking the man. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. Officers recovered a handgun near the man. No officers were injured during the incident. Shortly after the incident, USPP arrived on scene to provide assistance.

The IID will generally release the name of the decedent and any involved officers within two business days of the incident, although that period may be extended, if necessary, pursuant to IID protocol.
The IID will generally release body-worn camera footage within 20 business days of an incident. There may be situations where more than 20 days is necessary, including if investigators need more time to complete witness interviews, if there are technical delays caused by the need to shield the identities of civilian witnesses, or to allow family members to view the video before it is released to the public.
