BALTIMORE, MD – The Independent Investigations Division (IID) of the
Maryland Office of the Attorney General has identified an additional officer with the Edmonston
Police Department involved in the fatal pedestrian collision that occurred on Saturday, February
1, 2025, in Oxon Hill, Prince George’s County, Maryland.
On March 14, 2025, the IID identified the decedent as 23-year-old Aniyah Redd of Temple Hills,
Maryland. The IID also identified Forest Heights Police Officer Aaron Hazel, as well as Sergeant
Timothy Shomper and Corporal David Gross of the Prince George’s County Police Department
as involved officers.
The involved Edmonston Police Department officer is Chief of the department, Eric Beale, a 3-
year veteran of the department with 6 years of prior service.
The IID has the jurisdiction to investigate police officers as defined by Public Safety Article §3-
201. A police chief is explicitly excluded as a “police officer.” Therefore, a local state’s
attorney’s office has jurisdiction to investigate a police chief for their conduct. However, a local
state’s attorney’s office may request that the IID investigate a police chief for conduct related to
a police-involved fatality.
The Office of the State’s Attorney for Prince George’s County had jurisdiction over the
investigation of Chief Beale. On April 3, 2025, citing efficiency, the Office of the State’s
Attorney for Prince George’s County referred the case to the IID.
The IID continues to investigate the circumstances of the fatal pedestrian collision, and no
determinations have been made.
