Court rules Maryland Statute Prohibiting Persons with Felony-level
Convictions from Possessing Firearms is Constitutional
BALTIMORE, MD – Attorney General Anthony G. Brown issued the following
statement on the Supreme Court of Maryland’s June 6, 2025 decision in Robert L. Fooks v. State
of Maryland which upheld the constitutionality of Maryland’s law prohibiting individuals with
felony-level criminal convictions from possessing firearms.
“The decision by Maryland’s highest court keeps our communities safe. It makes clear that
Maryland can continue to keep firearms out of the hands of individuals with serious criminal
records - a policy consistent with common sense, our Constitution, and our commitment to
reducing gun violence.
As Attorney General, I remain dedicated to defending laws that save lives, hold people
accountable for their actions, and respect the rights of law-abiding Marylanders. We will
continue working every day to uphold laws that protect the safety and wellbeing of every
Marylander.”
