Salary: This position offers a salary range of $48,486 - $67,675, with potential for advancement up to $74,722 based on qualifications, equity, and hiring guidelines. Initial salary offers are determined by qualifications, experience, and available budget, and typically do not exceed $67,675.

DESCRIPTION: The Attorney General is the chief legal officer of the State of Maryland. The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) has the general charge, supervision, and direction of the State's legal business, acting as legal advisors and representatives of the major agencies, various boards, commissions, officials, and institutions of State Government. The OAG also protects the public by civil enforcement of antitrust, civil rights, consumer protection, and securities laws and regulations and by the prosecution of organized crime, Medicaid fraud, environmental crimes, insurance fraud, state tax evasion, and other statutorily assigned matters. As Maryland's 47th Attorney General, Anthony G. Brown leads the Office with a critical focus on equity, justice, and fairness.
The OAG is seeking an Administrative Aide to join its unit within the Department of Human Services (DHS). The DHS, operating through 24 local departments of social service offices, is committed to assisting economically vulnerable individuals, providing preventive services, and protecting at-risk children and adults across all of Maryland's 23 counties and Baltimore City. The unit includes a Principal Counsel, four Deputy Principal Counsel, one Assistant Deputy Principal Counsel, and sixteen Assistant Attorneys Generals.
This position is responsible for providing comprehensive administrative and secretarial support to a Deputy Principal Counsel and at least four Assistant Attorneys General.
Key responsibilities include:
- Prepare, compile, and type a variety of legal documents such as briefs, pleadings, affidavits, subpoenas, memoranda, and correspondence.
- Draft, review, and organize documents for trials; maintain litigation, advice, and subject files; perform electronic court filings; ensure case files are managed and legal records are compiled, assembled, and maintained with strict adherence to court deadlines.
- Manage schedules, conduct legal research, screen telephone calls and office visitors, assist with client communication, and general secretarial administration for the Unit, including interacting with other agencies and courts.
EXPERIENCE:
Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.
Experience: Applicants must have at least four years of experience providing administrative support in a legal environment. This experience should include responsibilities such as word processing, preparing legal documents, electronic court filing, and general administrative support for legal staff. Proficiency with Google Workspace applications (Docs, Sheets, Meet) and Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel) is required.
The ideal candidate is highly organized and able to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a busy legal office. They take initiative, approach problems thoughtfully, and are comfortable working both independently and as part of a team. Strong interpersonal skills, sound judgment, and attention to detail are essential, as is the ability to consistently produce accurate, high-quality work in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working as a legal secretary, legal assistant, or in a similar legal support role
- Proficiency with the Maryland Electronic Courts (MDEC)
- Experience compiling, formatting, or assisting with appellate briefs
- Experience with legal case management systems to track filings, deadlines, and case activity
