Salary: This position offers a salary range of $104,519 - $147,451, with potential for advancement up to $162,800 over time based on longevity and increased responsibilities. Initial salary offers are determined by qualifications, experience, equity, and available budget, and will not exceed $147,451.

DESCRIPTION: The Attorney General is the chief legal officer of the State of Maryland. The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) has the general charge, supervision, and direction of the State’s legal business, acting as legal advisors and representatives of the major agencies, various boards, commissions, officials, and institutions of State Government. The OAG also protects the public by civil enforcement of antitrust, civil rights, consumer protection, and securities laws and regulations and by the prosecution of organized crime, Medicaid fraud, environmental crimes, insurance fraud, state tax evasion, and other statutorily assigned matters. As Maryland’s 47th Attorney General, Anthony G. Brown leads the Office with a critical focus on equity, justice, and fairness. 

The Office of the Attorney General, Department of General Services (DGS), is seeking a dedicated and experienced attorney to serve as an Assistant Attorney General on its real estate team. DGS is charged with the procurement of commodities and services, energy, 

facilities maintenance, information technology, leasing of space on behalf of the State, the design and construction of State buildings and the acquisition and disposition of real property interests for the State of Maryland. DGS currently has 11 attorneys, led by the Principal Counsel and Deputy Principal Counsel and is supported by a Management Associate. 

In this critical role, the Assistant Attorney General will provide comprehensive legal counsel to the Office of Real Estate on a wide array of matters. This includes advising on the acquisition and disposition of real property, including navigating the eminent domain and condemnation process when necessary. The attorney will draft and review complex real estate transaction documents such as leases, contracts of sale, deeds, easements, and rights-of-way, ensuring that all documents are legally sound and aligned with the State’s interests. 

The position also involves overseeing the State’s leasing activities, ensuring compliance with applicable procurement laws and regulations. The attorney will address title matters, including verifying accurate property descriptions and securing title insurance when needed. Additionally, the role includes advising on legal issues related to environmental compliance, lease enforcement, and Public Information Act (PIA) requests as they pertain to DGS’s real estate operations. 

As a statewide resource, the Assistant Attorney General will also provide legal support to other State agencies on real estate-related matters, helping to ensure consistency, compliance, and best practices across the board. 

EXPERIENCE: The ideal candidate for this role will have a minimum of five years of experience, excellent research and writing skills and a demonstrated ability to handle complex real estate transactions. The successful candidate will have a proven track record of effective client counsel, preferably in a real estate-focused legal environment. Strong interpersonal and organizational skills, along with the ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced legal environment, are essential. Experience with government contracting/procurement is highly desirable. Admission to the Maryland Bar, or ability to waive in, is required.
